Sword Colada del Cid
LA COLADA is one of two swords, along with the Tizona, which legendary tradition attributes to the Cid, until it was given to his sons-in-law the Infants of Carrion. The sword had been won in battle by the Burgos warrior to the Count of Barcelona and, although it was given, next to the Tizona, to his sons-in-law the Infantes, the same was returned by these after the affront committed on his daughters Dona Elvira and Doña Sol in the town of Corpes and that gave rise to the name of the affront that narrates the song of Mio Cid.
After the incident El Cid had been dishonored and sought justice from the king. The trial culminates with the “riepto” or mourning in which the representatives of the cause of the Cid defeat the infants. These are dishonored in public joust and annul their wedding giving back also the swords. Being Colada given away again by the Cid to his knight Martín Antolínez.
“Martín Antolínez, mio ??vassallo de pro,
Prended to Wash, won her good lord “
The name according to Sebastián de Covarrubias, can owe its etimología to -Acero Colado-, or what is the same, clean and absent of impurities. Like the Tizona, in Cantar de Mío Cid, the sword fears opponents unworthy if it is wielded by a brave warrior.
The historians also doubt that the guarded one in the Real Palace of Madrid and shown like the sword Royal Colada is in fact the authentic one.
